Martian Plague

Shortly after a group of cosmonauts returned from an expedition to Mars in 2061, a small viral outbreak occurred near the Russian town of Sarov, a nuclear research facility closed to the public. Isolating those infected, the head nuclear researcher and amateur virologist Yulii Ivanovsky, exposed infected victims to varying does of radiation in addition to testing radiation directly on the virus itself.

It took years to complete, but once it was confirmed the pathogen was stable, Russia immediately set to arming all of their ballistic missiles with what they dubbed Krov’ yedok, the blood eater.
